March Madness, the most wagered sporting event in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Thousands of people are in Las Vegas for the most wagered sporting event, the NCAA March Madness college basketball tournament.

FOX5 went to the largest bookmaker in Circa Resort and Casino. Owner Derek Stevens says betting goes as fast as the eye can see.

“I mean March Madness for us and it all became very clear in Las Vegas, this is the biggest week of the year,” Stevens said.

Stevens said the hotel has a total of 500 rooms, but their sportsbook will receive over 20,000 bets per day. They are trying to get through this weekend so they can prepare for next weekend.

“The Sweet 16 and then Elite Eight weekend is going to be huge so we’re excited about that and then yeah not too far down the road two weeks later we have the NFL Draft coming to town,” said Stevens.

Circa opened the casino in October 2020 and the hotel in December. They were the first downtown Las Vegas casino and hotel to be 21+. This week, El Cortez, which is a mile from Circa, announced it would also be moving to 21+ ownership.

Stevens said it provides a higher quality experience.

“Really, it was about efficiency, you know you think about how many times our bartenders or our blackjack dealers have to identify someone. Well, moving to 21+ creates more of a club-like level of service quality,” Stevens said.
